which itinerans is this? from thailand
 

ive posted pics before, but i collected this musa itinerans on doi inthanon, the highest mountain in thailand. it was growing around 4500 ft in elevation. the tallest plants were approaching 40 ft.

in my garden in central alabama, it is very cold hardy. it suckers anywhere between 1-6 ft away from the main plant.

Please let me know if you need a good home for any of those suckers! I'd love to have a start of that at our Botanical Gardens.

Beat me to the punch, Hayes!!! LOL Will be interesting to see what responses you get on this! I think Rob planted his out, but I have potted mine up to store in gh to plant out come spring... Can't wait to see what I can get out of it next summer!

You need to see them flower, and even then there are some undescribed varieties so it may not have a proper name yet.

im wondering.....are there range maps (or just known ranges) for the itinerans varieties? or do these varieties overlap or intergrade?

i was hoping there was some information on this itinerans variety from doi inthanon through a species list from the mountain. im sure the flora has been studied and documented being such a diverse and unique habitat in thailand.

i collected what i think was another musa itinerans from vietnam that was totally different, but it didnt survive the USDA inspection trip. the flowers stalk was totally erect.

I did plant mine out. I'm not sure if I will dig it up or leave it out with heavy protection but as long as this heat lasts I won't have to think about what to do for awhile. I think basjoo is easier to protect in the ground and I wouldn't be surprised if itinerans was the same.

i bought an ornata variety that turned out to be something similar to what you have posted as gros michel. i think some tissue culture trays got mislabeled. frank tends to think mine is itinerans var guangdongensis aka burmese blue. the trunks dont freeze most winters...however this winter it froze to the ground.

At one point it was thought that 'Burmese Blue' was var. guangdongensis, but this is not the case. There are several purple-fruited itinerans forms.

Looks good! The strongly winged petioles, Brownish red to Bronze coloring on psuedostem looks like my Musa itinerans itinerans. Mine survived 28F with no leaf damage at all this last winter.

This is a old photo of my Musa itinerans itinerans, the pseudostem has a lighter green with bronzy color.

Hi,

There are in northern Thailand / Laos / Vietnam many tall M.itinerans varieties with purple fruits as it is higly polymorphic species. One of them is commercially named "Burmese Blue".
There is coming one PhD dissertation in which some of those Vietnam / Laos M.itinerans varieties are described with DNA analyses.
