Ensete superbum, types, seed size, germination.

Here's a picture of the three types Ensete superbum seeds that you can order.
The top one is E.superbum(India) from the Western Gnats of India, it is kinda hard to find, but rare palm seeds has it, and I think georgiavines also has it.
The middle one is E.superbum(Thailand) also called the "rock banana", it is the most common one found for sale, bananatree dot com and most places that are selling Ensete superbums are selling this one.
The bottom one is Ensete superbum Klauy Pa, which is also from Thailand, but the size of the seeds are smaller than the previous two. It might be a sub species of the other Thai specie. The seed size and thickness, texture is very similar to Musellea lasiocarpa seed. Rare palm seeds sells it, and possibly a few others that bought from RPS(Sunshine seeds also has it)
The all seem to benefit from tempature fluctuation, but the larger Indian type is by far the easiest.

Re: Ensete superbum, types, seed size, germination.

I've never tried the Thai species (the middle one). I just had another Indian superbum sprout yesterday. That makes three out of 25 or so in about 4-5 weeks time. The funny thing is, I had 1 out of 100 germinate out of the same batch, but I had them in a flat in the greenhouse. These last three were in a box on constant bottom heat. Not sure if that's what made the difference, or whether or not I got fungus gnats into the flat of 100. Anyway, I've got 4 plants now, so I'm happy! Can't wait to see them explode this summer.

What ever happened to your 'Kluay Pa' plants, Kyle? Did you grow them on, or did they die? You never have posted pics of them! I have had zero sprout out of about 150 so far.

I think I bought at the same time that batch of Indian superbum, and had alot of duds too. I'm not sure why. I'm trying again with some seeds from geogiavines, hopefully they will sprout as well as your have been. Maybe I should give them the constant heat treatment too?
I killed the Kluay pa when I left it in the cold greenhouse over winter.

Daen- I'm not sure, but the Thai superbum seem to like some fluctuation.
