I know this may be a dumb question, but I wonder if I can get away growing this one outdoors in zone 8b. So how hardy is it? How tall does it get, etc? Any information on it would be great as I'm getting ready to acquire one.

Have you found a plant source for Ensete perreirii? I've only heard of a couple people able to sprout it.
Can't help you figuring out the hardiness because it isn't well known yet, but most likely less cold hardy than E. ventricosum which can survive zone 8. |

Kyle,
I got it from a guy on another forum. I guess I'll have to treat it as a potted plant. ![]()

I have actually never heared of anyone who has managed to germinate them. Never seen any decent pictures of it either! (on the RPS site there is some, and on David Constantine's site,...that's it).
I've sown several times (100 seeds at a time) but no succes what so ever,... Remko. |

I ordered a few hundred also, and I guess the trick is to neglect them, like letting it dry out then water again. I tried it this winter next to a wood stove, and after digging through them it looked like a few had actually sprouted, but I didn't water and killed them off.

No joy here sprouting them either. but I am trying again with seed from a French guy so maybe it'll be fresher than RPS seeds.

I bet too much water, given what's been said about the seeds liking to dry out, then get wet.
I wonder where exactly they're from on the island. |

I wandered the same thing about there natural climate. It's been really hot here. I imagine it's the same there. I'll lay off the water.

Only found at a few sites within the Bemaraha national park, Mahajanga Province. which is apparently up on a limestone plateau (Plateau d'Ankara). which is supposed to be hot and dry.
I did google map it a while back, Mahajanga was on there anyway, big congrats to whoever sprouted that baby. I was in contact with a guy in Germany and it took him 2 years to get one to sprout! Put it into TC and we'll all have one! ![]()

How does one go about putting a plant into TC? How much does it cost, etc.? How big does the banana need to be? Mine is still very small.

Just got some Ensete perrieri seeds and have them soaking. Scarified every one of those buggers last night until after midnight. (after I rolled them in 3% hydrogen peroxide for 5 minutes or so.) I am going to germinate them using alternating warm/cool methods in sterile diatomaceous earth. 7 1/2 hours at 85-90 degrees and 16 1/2 off in the coolest place in my apartment. Will see how they germinate. I will plant them tomorrow morning. Results to follow.

Still waiting for them to show me a sign, but nothing yet. Hope springs eternal however....they WILL germinate. And when they do, one is going to Gabe to TC and the other I will TC.

You haven't waited long enough. LOL!!! The leaves on mine are getting burnt even after reducing the water to every third day.

good luck and hope they are pretty grown before you drive out there vary delicate and the low humidity you are going to get in to on that drive could damage them or you could just turn the heat off and let them set untill you get here |

Ok, seems there are some people out there that did it, and actually managed to get some bigger plants from seed,...

Remko, thanks for posting the link. Mine keeps getting burnt leaves and I'm thinking of moving it to the shade.

Pauly, the bananas making the trip with me will be so pampered that they might not want to get out of the car once we arrive! I won't even roll down the windows so that the leaves stay safe. They will get pleny of water and misting each morning and night.
I will have to limit the plants I bring along to bananas and just a couple of others due to space constraints. But whatever I can jam into the car, goes. |
