Black Paradisiaca

Thanks to the good directions from Tropicallvr, I found and photographed the black stemmed bananas in Golden Gate Park.

I didn't see alot of stem that wasn't black,

even on the shady side, but under the leaf stems was nice and bright.

It clearly gets black with exposure to the elements and light.

I didn't see any fruit or seeds, but I will check back occasionly...

Not the first time I've been wrong. Like with black bamboo(P.nigra)the south facing part of the stem may get bleached out by the end of summer.

The cheesmanii experiment still has me wondering though. I'm gonna buy some of that strechy plastic stuff and wrap it around the P-stem of M.cheesmanii, and then remove it in the fall, to see what the difference between full sun, and shade will be.
