yup. thats some pesky bamboo in a friends back garden. the pup that was separated in the pics went to me, along with 3 other fat ones. they start really robust and tall. have a pic of the flower.... if i can dig it up...

I think the plant you are referring to as Black Hawaiian is the Ele Ele banana which is similar, but not near as black. Yours looks to be the Balbisiana to me. Any who, I dig it.![]()

There are a few different forms of 'ele 'ele, one I saw along the Hana Highway on Maui had pure black petioles and pseudostems (as far as I could tell). I couldn't really get close enough to get good pictures, but this is what I saw.
