Anyone growing M. sp.nov"big flower" from seed?
 

Hi:
I was just wondering if anyone managed to grow plants from seed for this variety. My seedlings died while a sudden decrease in temp while in MI. I've been looking to buy plants with no luck at all. The seed supplier where I bought mine is no longer available. Willing to wait 'till next season if somebody is growing them and will have them available. Please let me know.

This species is Musa xishuangbannensis, and also incorrectly known as Musa itinerans var. gigantae. So if you find those seeds or plants, you are getting the same one as Musa sp. nov 'Big Flower'.

I got some seed to sprout. Here is a photo of one in the ground. The plant closest is the original, the others are suckers. It is a runner and since then a couple other suckers have come up, one almost 20ft from the mother.

As new information is gathered, names change naturally. At this point it appears the name for this plant will be Musa itinerans var. xishuangbannaensis. There are currently 6 soon to be published M. itinerans varieties.

Are you looking to sell some pups from some varieties?
You have a couple plants I'm looking for. Here's my list:

1. Musa "Praying hands"
2. Ensete glaucum, "snow banana"
3. Musa "ice cream"
4. Musa laterita
5. Musa SP nov "big flower", same as Musa itinerans subsp. xhihuanbanaensis (incorrect spelling) "gigantea" according to some members.
6. Musa "thousand fingers"
7. Musa balbisiana
8. Musa banksii
9. Musa muluensis

I bought seed identified as Musa sp. nov from Sunshine seed, a German supplier. It took over a year for a handful to germinate. How low did your temp drop to?

I'm on the UK south coast and was hoping they might be a candidate to grow outside. My seedlings have a nice red midrib. Have others found the same?

Lamentably, I haven't visited this site in ages. I had some musa fatalities and it was just too painful reading about all you brilliant growers. Must visit more.
