Hi,
I got this picture from austin. I would like to know if this kind of protection is enough our zone, 5-6 as USDA Hardiness tell. Ok, please let me know. Oh, when should I protect it? And can I use any dead leaves? I also have tons of extra mulch, can I use it as well? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Neil ![]() Last edited by v1rtu0s1ty : 08-26-2008 at 05:56 AM. |

I have luck with this. I use the stakes, wrap with landscape cloth, fill with leaves, and put a trash container cover over it. I am leary of using plastic that does not breathe. If you have a few warmer sunny days in winter, I am afraid the sun will pull moisture from the ground that can't escape. I fear it would promote rot. Of course I could be way off. LOL

Good evening folks. What are signs that I should start protecting my basjoo?

As your evening lows start to get below 45-50 degrees, you should start building the enclosures. It wouldn't hurt to begin putting leaves into the cage either as long as it is dry. If it is still raining a lot hold off as you don't want moisture trapped in the leaves all winter to rot the p-stem and corm. Dry also insulates better.
If the forecast says frost is likely, it's time to cover 'em up. I just moved to Vegas from Rockford a few months ago. My son has a Basjoo that I left there for him. |

Yep, I have already built the protection cage 2 weeks ago. It's very simple. I just used a regular burlap that I found in my garage. This way, it will be able to breath easily. I have also put mulch close to it but I have not actually put it yet around her. I've been collecting dead leaves too.

I used Sandy's method last winter. I placed a black lawn bag of leaves on each side and 2 over the top. I had 12 stands and never lost a psuedostem. It worked great.
