Who has the most Northern Banana?
 

Hello All
Just found out about the Musa Basjoo and have some great ideas for a tropical theme around my pool!

The tricky part is I live in Barrie, Ontario, Canada - not a tropical region :)

On a research mission to some local greenhouses, I'm being told that I am too far north for an outdoor year round Musa Basjoo, however, i've seen articles from some members in London, Ontario, and Toronto, Ontario who seem to have year round Musa Basjoos

Question: Is there anyone on this board who is Barrie or north that has year round Musa Basjoos? I'm really interested and thinking of giving it a shot

Any tricks or tips would be welcome as well

I live in Toronto right now but just moved here from Peterborough. You can definitely over winter a basjoo outside, just plant it around now (wait til after the cold this weekend) and mulch really heavy in the fall. There are people on here that have overwintered them in zone 3 Alberta, if they can do it, we can do it.

I know where some are at the 45th parelell in Michigan U.S.A:)

Siting the plant and soil preparation will be key to the plants success.

Not outdoors, but bananas are now being commercially grown in Iceland. In a few years, they expect to be one of the leading producers of bananas in the world. The lack of sunlight requires two years to fruit, but it's still pretty amazing what you can do with all of that volcanic heat.
