Default Where to Purchase?

Besides www.going-bananas.com, where on the internet is a good place to purchase cold hardy bananas (not ebay). Do they ship outside of their specified window. I would like to get some plants potted and growing in the house before putting them out in a month or so.

Could try www.banana-tree.com
Greenearth are also OK I believe. http://www.greenhousebusiness.com/bananaplants.html
I also think Worldwideplants has many plants and a good reputation at www.worldwideplants.com

I've had great success with the plants I've bought from www.wellspringgardens.com

I have killed off a couple (not bananas though), but it was months after I bought them. Their plants are probably most tissue cultures because they were pretty small when I got them. I got around 7 bananas and they were all around 6"-8" tall, but grew very fast.

Tammy,

I generally use a slow release 10-10-10 on all of my plants. Once a year I also fertilize with potasium nitrate.

Best,

Jeff

Hey guys and gals, this is what I bought from GreenEarth Inc. on the 5th of February. I'm by no means an expert, but the plant labeled Dwarf Brazilian to the left concerns me. I'm not aware of Dwarf Brazilian having any red in the leaves. Is that correct? Also, I'm not too happy with the Dwarf Orinoco to the right. Is it toast? I've sent an email to Ted. We'll see what we can get worked out.

Dwarf Brazilian does have some red in the leaves. The D.O. should be fine. It doesn't look like the stem is damaged in any way, just one leaf. Why do you think it is toast? Is there something wrong with it that we can't see in the picture besides the one broken leaf?

It's not actively growing a new leaf like the other banana. Hasn't been in the month I've owned it. It's been inside for a month in a south facing window. Watered when the soil dries out.

You won't get a banana plant to grow much, if at all, indoors in typical home conditions. I wouldn't worry about it much. Set it outside on warm days, but go easy on the watering. If it isn't growing, it will easily rot with too much H2O.

but i am having some trouble with some of my banana plants i had to bring indoors from the bad winter cold while others have grown about 8 ft tall from just 1-2 feet tall Corms . Tammy

Westwood, that's fantastic, but I was referring to typical home temperatures and conditions in the winter here, which would be around 70F or so, dry air, and low light levels. It is not conducive to growing bananas. Sure, there are some varieties, or species, that'll do better than others indoors, but D.O. is not one of them. In general, you will not get much growth, if any, from a typical banana plant indoors during the winter.
