Hi,
I have this small Basjoo pup that was given to me a while ago by a friend. They bought it from an online store.

It's about a foot tall, and is in a small clay pot right now. And I was wondering what I should do with it during the winter.

I can't really bring it inside, and so I need to know what to do with it. Should I plant it in the ground somewhere? And then what should I do?

Sorry, I am new to any banana plant that's not truly tiny or little prince

If you have a nice spot to keep it inside, its definitely the best option. It wont grow much inside so space probably wont be much of an issue. Just try to find a bright window and water it once a week or so indoors. I dont think it will survive in the ground that small, this late in the year. You can probably plant it out next spring though and if it gets to a nice size, you can protect it and leave it in the ground (and if its still small, you can just dig it up.

I agree with Alex, its too cool for it to go in the ground now won't grow enough to keep the roots alive to over winter in the ground. keep it inside, let it dry out between waterings. and lots of light. hope it makes it. I remember back when mine was a foot tall I sometimes cut it back mid November just for space reasons. All the best with it.

My friend is leaving theirs outside. So I hope their makes it.

I might have to keep it at my grandmas house then. I will put it in a bit bigger pot and bring it inside once it needs to be.

About when should I bring it inside? Right now it is 46 degrees.

Oh wow really ? that getting cold . when the temps are in the low 40's that's when you start to see the leaf damage. so fbefore that.

It is 50 degrees now. It was 90+ a couple days ago. Michigan is weird....

So I should clean it up some and make sure there's no diseases on it and then move it indoors with my grandma in her house.

It is 64 degrees now, warmed up a bit

I went outside and checked on it and repotted it. It looks pitiful now, it must have gotten pretty cold outside. As every leaf except one has died and I had to take them off.





It doesn't look bad. Just it only has one leaf now it will grow back though

Then on the last picture, it shows the under leaf shot. But there are tiny black spots on part of it, I sprayed it with some rubbing alcohol outside and rubbed it down sum. Just in case they where spider mites. But they didn't come off. So what are they? Just spots that I don't need to worry about?

I just repotted it. It was in a pot that I am guessing was about a 4.5" clay pot? It was completely root bound. So I put it in a pot that is a bit bigger it should grow a bit now.

I am going to keep it in my bathroom for a little bit. And then it will go some where in my house.

I like your basjoo. The spots could be places little mites were chewing or could be from over watering. I"m a newbie so I don't know for sure. If it got cold there you just need to water it once to twice a week.

Do you have any updates of your basjoo?

I just ordered one and am currently raising two super dwarf cavendish in my sunroom.

Hi,
Ahh, yes here's some pictures just taken a minute ago:




It looks a lot healthier and happier now that it is indoors in the warmth.

It still has some black dots on it. And there's just the one dry/darker spot in the on picture.

I think that's just something it will have though. As it is doing very well.

Banana plants are pretty cool I am just limited on room. So this one basjoo will probably be my only one for now. My yard is very small.

Try to get it through the winter and plant it outside next spring.That is the whole idea with basjoo, it is hardy. Protect it in the winter ( much info on this) and leave it in the ground. If you want BIG basjoos in cold climates, they can easily be dug in fall and allowed to go dormant in a basement or other cool ( not cold) place.

Next winter it will have to stay in the ground outside. I live in a mobile home/trailer so there's no cooler spots, and no basement.
