Default What is the best banana plant to grown in Kansas City?

I am wanting to plant a banana tree in my yard as part of the landscape. What is the best one to grow in my zone? Do I need to dig it up in the fall and plant it again in the spring?

Welcome to bananas.org.
Musa Basjoo might be a possibility as an ornamental plant.
All other banana plants that produce edible fruits most likely will not make it in your growing zone.

Hello from across the river! I am in Kansas.

Musa Basjoo is the only type that I know *will* winter over: It does better if you heap leaves over it in the Fall but most years it will come back from the roots if you do not. Mine grew about 7 feet tall: it is not one of the big varieties.

Mekong Giant MIGHT winter over in Kansas: nobody is certain. I lost my Musa Basjoo, so this year I am giving a Mekong Giant a try.

OH! Edited to add: our growing season is too short for a banana to produce fruit, alas.

Texas star, orinco, and California gold will live there as long as you dig them up each fall and store them in a dry place that stays above freezing. Hope that helps

I would plant Musa basjoo and let them winter over. They will spread that way and give you a nice grove in time.
