Variegated Cold Hardy Bananas
 

While the Manini a'ea'e, Florida, and some wild acuminata are beautifully variegated, the rest of the photos I'll be posting will be of Variegated Cold Hardy Bananas which are much easier to grow in cooler climates.

A pair of dwarf sister pups in the Pisang Awak subgroup

The sister on the left is an all white dwarf that will eventually die after being separated from the mother plant.

The sister on the right is a dwarf Phantom, it will survive and produce fruit after being separated from the mother plant.

Now with variegation like that is the leaf thin and fragile?

No, but there is a sensitivity to direct sunlight. The Phantom will adapt as the leaf matures

the semi variegated plant you sold put out 2 pups and eventually died.

of the 2 pups, one is variegated like here mother. the second one is more variegated, but not as variegated as the one in this picture.

the one that is more variegated put out a pup this year. its basically green with just a few streaks of yellow in each leaf. its still pretty and i will move that one to a new location this coming spring.

The pattern on these variegated are amazing, which variegated do you folks find the easiest to grow from seed remembering my climate is not like pr giant's here in the UK so scattering seeds is not an option lol!

I share those lightly variegated Pisang Awak because if someone is willing to put a little effort into propagating them they usually get some beautifully variegated pups. It's a good choice for growers that are looking for normal dwarf namwa type plants because they cost the same and beautifully variegated banana pups are the bonus.

How Hardy would you say Ae’Ae is ?

Mine is showing some slight damage even tho we haven’t gone below 35 degrees yet

Those look cool kinda mint looking I would try any variegated. As for the AEAE question. My buddy owns Plantdelights nursery in Raleigh NC. His property is in a valley aka microclimate. A few years ago I don’t remember the winters but for atleast one winter I can remember they kept a huge AEAE alive but cutting it down. Making a cage around it and filling up the cage with shredded leaves. It came back next spring but winter after that never came back. So they can take some cold.
