Default Unlurking....

Hi Guys. Time to unlurk at last. I'm over in the UK and have been reading this forum for a fair while. The cold hardy forum has given me lots of things to think about in how to keep the nanas alive and flourishing (apart from our dear old Basjoo and Sikkis).

Usually, I wrap my nanas in winter with fleece, but this year, I'm trying lifting some, and keeping them tucked up in a cool place. I don't have a cellar or suchlike, so have popped them into a low attic. So far, so good although we're having a warm time of it this year so far.

I'm also trying out nana germination. After reading the posts here, I've put together a warm/cold environment...30C during the day, 10C at night. Some more nana seeds are winging their way across as I speak from Jim and Seedmans, so I can give more varieties a go. Crossing my fingers for germination..

I recognise some of the members names already as we meet on other forums (Hi Mark, Steve, Erlend....).

Anyway, I'll endevour to post more here, although I'm definitely on that steep learning slope.

Thanks guys. :-)

Fleece - this is horticultural fleece. It's made from non-woven polypropylene fibre and comes typically on a roll (or smaller). It is usually white, but green is now coming available, which makes it slightly more aesthetically pleasing to look at in the garden. It's breathable and lets light and water through it, but protects the plant underneath from a small amount of frost. The more you wrap the plant up with it, the more protection you'll get. It also comes in different grades or weights...the heavier it is, the more protection it gives.

You can buy it also in ready-made 'bags' that have a draw-string at the bottom.

Hi Helen.
Glad to see you branching out...
This is a good site if you interested in Musa (stating the obvious -sorry )
Gabe 15 has unbelievable knowledge and I believe he is only a "PUP" as well.
Any luck with those seeds yet....I only have Monkey fingers so far.
Not given up yet though.
Dont you just envy these American folk who can just swap pups to their hearts content.
If your Sikki did not make it I will send another.
How is that Basjoo ? Not doing much at the moment probably.
Regards,
Sidney Parker.
