Default Too late in Zone 7 to transplant basjoo?

Hey folks! Long time, no chat!

I have to dig up two big clumps of basjoo. I'm pretty sure I can just move them to a new spot even though it's October 7, but thought I would get other opinions. I've never lost a single plant, regardless of how I winterize, yet I'm not 100% sure it can get a good root structure going before winter.

I'm a complete noob, but I'd say bring them into a garage or crawlspace and put them outside in the spring.

Hi Moonshiner,
No expert. I am a learner myself. But would like to help.
I think it is a little too late for that. I am in zone 7b and my acorn trees r beginning to shed their leaves. And temperatures have dropped at night. I am planning on bringing my ml (not basjoos though) into the crawl space within a week or two.
Alternatively, you could put your best without cutting off pups, into big pots and put them indoors, near a sunny window to continue to grow at a slow pace through the winter.

If you have the plants to plants to spare, maybe give it a try with some plants. Plant them in well draining soil. It could be a good trial that we all could learn from. Good luck.

I am in Zone 7b in winter. Actually I have tried that for the past few years. I have : 1)left them in the ground, cut them just above the comb and covered with mulch. They rotted to the core and in fact had rotted cavities. 2) I kept them in the ground. They were 2-3 ft tall. Removed their leaves, placed netting and filled it will fallen oak leaves. They still rotted. Did not get a single plant alive. So now in the last two years, I take a few of them to the garage in pots. This year I plan on placing two inside the house, the rest in the crawl space, minus the leaves and hoping I will get some fruit next year. Trial and error for the last 5-6 years now.
Best to you.
