Unfurled it today to make sure it wasn't bunching under the can and everything looks good. All the pups look alive and firm (a little rot at the tops but that's nothing unusual.

I think it is still a little early to completely uncover it as we will likely get a few more frosts, but I can now leave the can off of it and open it on the nice, dry days. It will be under a clear tarp anyway, so a good greenhouse effect to carry it through.

I also now know where all those squash seeds I threw off the deck one evening went:p

What was the result of your experiment? Pictures please.

Its pluggin' along. Not as tall as I had hoped but taller than last year. I did leave 2 large followers that are 75% as big as the mother, so that may have slowed her growth down a bit, and it has been a relatively short season this year, but all in all I am pleased with her progress. The tallest leaf in the pic is about 12.5 feet off the ground at its tip.

Thanks for asking!

Gonna try a different over-winter set-up this year as I have had so much success in the garage:mad:. I took Cincinanna's suggestion on heat and light to heart and moved the grow into the daylight basement of my house. I think the biggest issue will be humidity as our rather capacious wood stove is directly behind where I took the photo. I am still probably going to put up more reflective material and a curtain to protect the area from direct wood heat, but this should suffice for now.

There are definitely more plants to go in here, but the rest can be outside for several more weeks. These plants are recent divisions and I am doing my best to manage soil moisture levels so they have been in areas protected from overhead water. I know there are some ugly spots on the leaves but at this point they have stabilized and the plants should start to show some movement.

The small plant sitting on the shelf to the left is the sikkimensis I got from Phyllostachys and is doing well. Its just about to open it's first new leaf.

One last pic of the 'new' mother stem for next year. I hated to put her to bed, it has been so warm and looks like it will continue to be for a few more weeks, but due to a confluence of factors it had to be done today.

And....I know it doesn't even come close to comparing to the leaves produced by a lot of the growers on this forum, but I think this is the biggest leaf I have seen come off this plant.
