Thinking of Ice Cream Banana
I was thinking about growing an Ice Cream banana plant, this spring. I know this is a cold tolerant plant, but I'm wondering if anyone has brought one to fruit, in the Breaux Bridge, Louisiana area, south of I-10. We usually have a long growing season. The high today was 73. Tomorrow will be 75 and it usually doesn't get cold until mid November. Even then, it usually doesn't freeze, until after December. This year, we didn't get a freeze, only a frost. Anyone out there have any success?

In central Florida north of Leesburg. Survived the 20s no protection. Mine are fried but the core is sprouting. Last nights freeze did nothing.

Re: Thinking of Ice Cream Banana
I have a blue java/ice cream growing my backyard. I had it for a year and it's been growing fast. I am in South Texas. We usually get some frost during the winter, this year we didn't get much frost and it held up. The lowest we hit was about 30F for a couple of hours and I didn't see any damage.
Check out my posts. I try to post at least once a month. http://www.bananas.org/f2/blue-java-journal-21132.html |
Re: Thinking of Ice Cream Banana
I have one in Phoenix, and of all my bananas, only the blue java and the dwarf red lost leaves this winter.
