Default This is a Test: Musa Basjoo-Atlanta

So tried something new with my 3 year old Basjoos that topped out at about 7 feet this year. As the leaves died off I left them on after November. They seemed to provide some measure of protection from the wind. As you can see below the top of the stalks are still green. The leaves keep coming back every time it warms up. But this weekend is the real test as the temps are dropping to 20 or below tonight and Sunday night. The wind gusts have been 30 to 40 mph all day. So lets see what happens

Mien turned to mush after about 25F because the leaves were too small to protect the plant, so tonight should be a great test for your basjoos since it should get down to about 20F in ATL.
Looking forward to an update! Seems like they were just about to make a new leaf because of all the warm weather, its a shame that the freezing weather will set it back, but the again it is still February so winter cold has a right to continue!

Mine always "melt" down to the ground over winter in Muncie, Indiana. But they come back in the spring so that's cool.

Mine have too in the past, especially with the snow last year and a week of sub freezing high temps. But as of today they are still standing. Dont know how much damage though under those dead leaves. The tallest one believe it or not did have a bud. I am hopeful as it should only get below 32 twice in the next 15 days.

Good luck with your Basjoo, I hope they do well through the rest of the winter. If you want to call it winter, lol. I'm curious to see how they do so I can have somewhat of an idea of what to expect next winter.

I live in Locust Grove, about 30 miles south of Atlanta. I have ordered 4 banana plants, this will be my first time trying to grow bananas. It should be interesting.

I do have some Palms that have been growing for a few years and a Loquat tree that I planted last year.

Interesting. Have seen quite a few palms and citrus in that area and south of there. I have one surviving windmill palm and 1 and half pindos...lol. One of the pindowns has had all the leaves go brown except for the center spoke which was coming our before it went dormant in November

Last year was year 3 for mine and they got to 7 feet from the ground. Hopping they will grow from their current 4 to 5 feet and reach for the sky.
