Default spring update

Once again Saba is the winner. This year i left out almost everything.
Saba w plastic wrap and burlap and heavy mulch did have christmas lights but they died soon after wrapping. This matt is green and growing this week the cigar leafs have grown out about a foot so far.most of the outside leaves were mushy and needed trimming.

Two Matts of Saba w nothing,I topped these and trimmed them and they all show green in the middle on the biggest stems. One of the matts has a nice pup pushin up.

Black Thai mulch at the base, this was two stems about 4 feet they were mushy to about 6 inches were i did find some yellowish maybe slightly green firm stems, the have darkened up fom the sun and heat but I think at worse i should see pups from the corm but expecting to see the stems push out.

Tall Orinoco,no protection. Two matts of these chopped off a foot or so of stem they all show green in middle.

D orinoco, Wrapped in plastic and burlap heavy mulch I did this to these because One of the stems should flower soon. there green and showing some sign of growth couple of pups under mulch.

Raja Puri,3 foot stem plastic "tent' mulch at base, this plant looks good no rot pulled back top of burnt leaves and have a nice green cigar ready to grow whenever it wants.

unknown local banana, no protection this matt always does fine chopped tops all green centers.

Gold finger,3 foot stem also a "tent' just plastic over top mulch loose ends to keep from flying away, trimmed and topped looks good fairly firm should see growth from stem will have to wait on this one not to sure.

Temps were again mild this year and winter was short I have only been home for a few days this year but have been keeping a eye on the weather we had some time in the upper 20 s and many days around freezing but things seem good. I am back to work in florida soon but should return in May to work from my home port,I will know for sure then how all plants made out. If all goes well I will get to see a Saba flower this year. Will post pics if weather gets bad before I leave.

Interesting report. We should have same absolute minimum temperature. We have had a very mild winter (lowest absolute -5C/23F) also here, but it was the most rainy winter i have ever seen. So i'm not sure if the data that you collect also applied here.
However, I managed to keep a dwarf orinoco alive in my cold greenhouse. Just started to push its first new leaf today.
I've got to try saba.

update on this, Black Thai is growing good, goldfinger did push out from last years stem and also has a pup of equal size. Raja Puri is growing from full stem were it stopped last season.

The Only Thing that didnt make it was my largest saba stem,I cut it down today and it had a flower in it half way up. Not sure why every stem survived but this one must have something to do with the flower inside.

Good news and bad news for you. So sorry to hear that the Saba did not make it. You had the highest hopes on that one.

thought i would put some end of the season info on my plants..
This years big grower has been the black Thai. My matt has grown from flat ground to around 11 ft of stem on the tallest and it has slowly been pushing a flag leaf out that will never make it. The corm has pushed out around five large plants many w pups.

I never got to see bananas this year my fruiting D.Orinoc stalks only made five or six leaves all season.. they seem to be suffering from last winter..

Saba are about the same as always I have one that will fruit in the next couple leaves..They are monsters but seem to max out around 11ft. in my yard..

well Im heading south tomorrow ahead of schedule to beat the bad weather and I have had no time to make any preparations to my plants..so there on there own this year unless they can hold out until thanksgiving.good luch to them.

Made it home no severe damage yet. Thanks for the help going to wrap a few big stalks and leave everything else natural.

You wrap your Saba? Mine are 12-15 ft tall and haven't made up my mind if I will wrap them or not.

Well I think the weather will end any chance of any stem making it through winter. I am in Mexico so I will not know how cold it gets but with prdeictions in the teens I think it will be a wait and see what corms will be surving this unusual freeze. Good luck everyone.
