Sensation!!! Pseudotrunks of Musa sikkimensis survived very well!!!

Hi,

today I unprotected first two of my five outdoor bananas. The pseudotrunks of Musa basjoo "Sakhalin" at my greenhouse have also survived the past very mild winter. Perhaps one of the pseudotrunks will flower and fruit this summer. But I will be in Brasil in August, but my friend Chris will look after my bananas.

I was very amazed as I unprotected the first of my both sikkimensis. It was in one styropor turm filled with moist to nearly wet bark chips. The both pseudotrunks of the Musa sikkimensis are survived very well and regrow now!

The lowest winter temperature was only -8°C. Very mild for Germany! Climate warming by Greenhouse Effect!

Are there also other people, which do have the same experiences like me?

I'm now celebrating this success of keeping pseudotrunks of Musa sikkimensis and am drinking sekt!

Congrats, that is good to hear. I had mine in a cold green house and the
temperature never came below zero in it. I think the coldest temp here
was about 5 or 6 below zero. It looks like we are moving towards zone 9 in a
couple of years. Not too bad for us banana-growers.

Forgotten to say that you have still the risk of frosts in the night.

Mine is also regrowing now. I protected mine with a trash bag full of leaves placed over the top of it, and our low in Knoxville this year was 13F. My M. basjoo, protected in the same fashion, is regrowing also.

Hi!

There are now the pics! I have now unprotected the second sikkimensis, the Musa sikkimensis "Red Tiger"!

The Musa basjoo "Sakhalin" from Baldur Garten at my greenhouse after the successful overwintering! Perhaps one of the pseudotrunks will flower and fruit this year in summer.

The Musa sikkimensis self grown from seed, it was unprotected yesterday, was in the styropor turm filled of moist to nearly wet bark shredder!!

The Musa sikkimensis "Red Tiger", unprotected today! The pseudotrunk is still okay, will also regrow! Even the pup is survived!

Joachim, did you cut off the stems before the winter or have you only
removed the leaves????

Hi,

yes, I removed the leaves and cutten the pseudotrunks to approx. 3 feet back. Orginally the plants were about 8 feet tall last year with leaves.

But the bananas will regrow quickly when the weather is right warm.

very good for banana growers, but the garden here was already 2 winters is zona 9a, this winter it would be a zone 9b

You are right Robin, a zone 9, winter, but we are not yet in a zone 9 like
for instance California, we can still have frosts till mid-may, you never know.

congratulations. I took the chickens way out and put mine in the greenhouse.

interesting times in western europe. we know sikkimensis and basjoo are hardy now lets see what other varieties can make it through a winter and even more fun which ones we can get to produce fruit. If holland makes zone 9b then SW england will be easy there with the Atlantic weather patterns.

My Rajapuri and dwarf orinoco are well underway.
