How does banana's root spread? downwards? sideways?

oh, then my winterprotection plan would not work. I was planning to put a bucket around the roots. I will remove the butt of the bucket so that both sides are open. Then put the bucket until the top part is the same level as the soil. This way, when snow melts, the water will not reach the roots. It's going to stay dry.
