Should we separate pups from the mother plant or is it ok the leave them on? Pros/cons

Yes, keeping three too four plants at a time keeps the energy focused on only several plants. However if you are fertilizing (A LOT) IT is fine if you leave on a lot. If you are or are fertilizing, and you have three too four pstems, you will get big bunches. If you are fertilizing, and have a lot of pstems, you will get medium to small bunches, but more often. Another pup separation question for cold a hardy banana, Helen's Hybrid to be specific.

Just curious if anyone has any recommendations for when to stop separating pups due to season winding down. We have another 6-7 weeks before our average first frost and probably 10-11 weeks before our average first hard frost.

I do have a greenhouse that could extend those dates by a week or two.

i was wondering the same about the basjoo... when should i stop separating pups if i plan to leave it in the ground over winter

Stop now and let your plants establish a solid root system for the next 65 day of your growing /healing in for the season.

Acceptable ways are to root prune or lift your plants to a container.

Plants fair better with a full container root system.

Our window is October for the best roots you can grow.

Root prune while the plant is in the ground to separate the plant from main plant.

Do not disturb/move anything else.....leave in place..just sever.
The plant will adapt fairly fast and enjoy the separation.
If one decides to move the plant in 30 plus days .....the plant should have enough rootstock to continue,

On this subject, ive got about 4 months until my first possible frost date, i have allowed one follower on each of my plants to remain, but the namwahs continue to pup like crazy.. am i damaging my plants by continually removing the pups? Everytime i hear the shovel cut that corm i whince! My goal is fruit, so i dont want to leave all the pups or id have 100 plants in that mat! Is there another way to stop a pup from growing?

You can cut off the top portion of the pup to a little below the ground without risk of severing the roots of the main plant and then jam a long screwdriver into the center of the pup with the goal of gouging the growth point of the pup. After insertion rotate the screwdriver to ensure that you hit/kill the growth point.

Some people remove the top layer of the mulch and then spray with a hose to better identify the connection and the roots of the Mother plant.

Remove pups while they are still young and small with a small trowel/hand spade instead of a shovel or digging bar.
