Overwintering my Ice Creams

For me here in SoCal, it's still the growing season, but I'm already starting to worry about what I should do with my Ice Creams over the winter. I'm not so much worried about the cold as I am about the rain. We get rainstorms during the winter and fall here. I need to do something to make sure my plants don't get root rot. I thought of putting a tarp on the ground around my banana plants to deflect the rain. Will this work?

I don't see why it wouldn't work as long as it drains the water away and you remember to water it occasionally.

Sounds good. I'm pretty good at checking on my plant so I should have no problem remembering to water it. Since it is cold hardy, it might actually make a little bit of progress over the winter, since our winters here are relatively mild.

I think a tarp should be a pretty good way of keeping it dry. If you dont have any plants growing underneath the banana, then you might be able to get a tarp to cover all the soil around the plant. You can first put a mound of gravel (the gravel would be highest by the stem of the banana, and then it would gradually get smaller) and then the tarp would go over that. This way, the water would fall away from the plant and keep it dry.
As far as cold tolerance, that should not be a problem for a zone 10!

Thanks for the idea. I used to have a lot of gravel in my yard, but then it was redone and it was all taken out. I guess I'll have to buy some at OSH or something. Appreciated!
