Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group
Yes there is a bunch of us here. I had a very bad problem when I would go in to a store and I saw banana plants I would have to buy them and take them home. I would justify it every time. Now I can just look at them and hope someone gives them a good home. Im not cured at all. But its getting better.

I do the exact same thing! My wife usually drives because she hates my driving so it gives lots of good banana looking!

Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group
If I'm in a nursery with Mom, and I spy a nana I don't have, she spots it in the cart and wants to know why more bananas? But once they're in the ground she loves 'em.

Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group
Nothing around Topsail as I lived 30mins from there for a year. Now live in Wilmington which is a hr away from there. Most places aren't ordering nanners anymore. Best place to find some is a place called Pender Pines Nursery. From Topsail just take 17 south to Hampstead county. It will be on the right side of the road. Should be like 30mins away. Gary is the owner and a nice guy. We had a bad winter here so all his nanners growing around the place are still small. He claims this large mat of nanners is cavendish but I'm 99% sure he is wrong as they get no prtection and always come back.
He sells nanner wise Cavendish Siam Ruby Corodo Velutina Bordolen Basjoo Reds Yellow Thats all I have seen past few years. Here is the address 20949 U.S. 17 Hampstead, NC 28443-3149 (910) 270-2706 |

Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group
Great place to eat is the new york cafe I think thats the name. Cheap and good! Also if you pay enough attention you will see two small houses that have orinoco nanners growing right down the street from Wings. One has grass and a very nice yard landscaped. Also has Velutina growing. I would not keep any of the nanners I listed at Gary's in the ground unless you had pups to bring in. Basjoo of course would be fine.

If you want to take a drive south to Charleston SC, you can find Carolina Nurseries they sell about 15 different varieties.

Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group
Well, I have about a dozen bananas here in San Jose, CA, but I have about 130 fruit-bearing plants on our 7,200-foot lot, and that's with the house, the driveway, the sidewalk, everything. It's an expensive addiction, because you have to have a house, and out here, they are REALLY expensive and don't come with much land. Coke would be cheaper.
What I really love is when I give CRFG garden tours, and people walk away scratching their heads saying, "I guess I have more space than I thought I had..."
