NorCal deep freeze
OK so I am depressed. No frosts yet so far this year, but from the arctic is coming a perfect scenario. It takes a lot for us to freeze, and I think that might be coming.
This image shows a strong jet stream coming STRAIGHT south on Monday. This is like transporting our houses 1000 miles to the north. We're really unlucky. If arctic air comes over the ocean, it can moderate some but in this case, we have no hope..... It's going to be a rough 1 or 2 nights before the warm rain comes later in the week. I've been using up a lot of freezepruf, and tomorrow I should finish. Really though.. what else can I do? Ideas people? It's just going to be one night and I hate to take so much damage for one freak night. Should I set little fires? set out space heaters? just spray more freezepruf? What about an electric blanket haha Where the heck is the EL NINO?!? ahhh this is painful. Maybe some of you in colder areas are used to it, but it's so depressing to lose plants like this How cold is it going to get? No way to know now, but it could be upper 20s....... |
Re: NorCal deep freeze
I'm depressed too. We're expecting 30 degree temperature tonight. A week ago the winds broke two banana plants in half. They both had just put out a bloom. I'm leaving them half broken in hopes that they may still survive, but previous winds have also decimated most of the leaves.
I have a Manzano that has some small bananas, but who knows what it will look like tomorrow. I was planning to order some Freezpruf, but didn't expect temperatures to drop like this so quickly. |
Re: NorCal deep freeze
Already 38 degrees at 9:30PM. Tonight is gonna be fun! I expect to wake up to a bunch of roasted plants

Tonight the clouds will save you, but it might be coming Monday night:)

Re: NorCal deep freeze
Wrap the best trunks on your plants with burlap or fiberglass house insulation. You may lose some leaves but the plants should recover quickly down there.

Re: NorCal deep freeze
Can I irrigate tonight?? I know harvey has done it. Not sure how much is needed though per hour

Re: NorCal deep freeze
ARRGHH mercury drops below 32 and damage has started. I will report how good freezepruf did tomorrow
|
Re: NorCal deep freeze
Oh boy this could be ugly until Wednesday. We could be looking at 3-4 year temp lows. I knew this would be an ugly year since the Sun is at the quiet portion of its 11 year cycle.

Re: NorCal deep freeze
What the heck is this..!???? SNOW? arrgh. Be positive I guess.. it's global warming
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SACRAMENTO HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WATCH FOR THE SOUTHERN SACRAMENTO VALLEY... DELTA AND NORTHERN SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY EVENING. * TIMING: SNOW IS EXPECTED TO POSSIBLY BEGIN EARLY MONDAY MORNING AND CONTINUE THROUGH THE DAY BEFORE TAPERING OFF IN THE EVENING. * SNOW LEVEL: LOWERING TO NEAR SEA LEVEL EARLY MONDAY. On the other hand, it's exciting to re-live the year 1888. |
Re: NorCal deep freeze
I'll help you with an un-scientific experiment to see if your freezeproof is worth it or not. All my banana plants fried the last 2 nights, and are unprotected aside from the canopy of drooping leaves.
We had a nice soaking rain so I won't be watering thru the night. My most cold sensitive are in an enclosure with Christmas lights, but are still fried, being cold sensitive. It's supposed to get to 26 degrees tonight. I went out 1/2 hour ago and there is already frost built up. Good luck to you. |
Re: NorCal deep freeze

Re: NorCal deep freeze
It was 24.4 degrees this morning when I left to go to work (on my motorcycle). I'm not worried about any of the corms surviving, I am worried about the stems surviving so I can have fruit next year...
I'm also concerned that my citrus might be toast... |
Re: NorCal deep freeze

Re: NorCal deep freeze

Re: NorCal deep freeze
My bananas are still green but toniight will be on the 32 F so I am cutting all the banana leaves and tied them around the pstem and I will put a trash can liners on top of the pstem and I'll wrap the pstem with clear plastics.
This is the first time I'll do this so I am crossing my fingers if I can save most of my bananas. The small ones I am covering them with plastic pots. |
