new basjooer
New to the muss basjoo thing. Just wanted to say high and that I am addicted to this site. My wife and 9 year old daughter think I am overly obsessed with my basjoo's. I am trying to get my back yard tropical enough so it will tell me to drink a beer. I planted 4 basjoo's and they seem to be liking the soil and locations. I am putting banana fuel and fish oil down once a week. Do you think I should do more? Thanks for any feedback. I am near Cleveland Ohio.

Re: new basjooer
Welcome to the fun hobby of banana growing in cold climates! Every year, strangers ask me what kind of plants I am growing. Which leads to an interesting discussion....
As long as you don't see deformed or spotted leaves, I think that your feeding plan will be acceptable. I use fertilizer every 2 weeks - but I would do it more frequently if I remembered.... Erik G |

Re: new basjooer
MiracleGro seems to be a good all around fertilizer to get you going. Regardless of what you are using, if you're getting a new leaf every 5 days, you're spot on.

The grow season is too early to tell if there is a challenge. At first plants will look in distress but as time passes they will look better. Your plants will improve as weather improves in your area, and will be even better next year and the year after. Stay the course.... Where did you pick up your banana fuel?.....and what brand fish oil are you using......and why? |

Re: new basjooer
I got the banana fuel from wellspring. The fish oil is off the shelf from Lowe's. I heard somewhere that it can't hurt and you can't put too much down. It's all in my head probably.

Re: new basjooer
I use miracle grow, during the hottest part of the summer 2 times a week, and get a leaf about every 5 days as well. Seems to work pretty good. I use the sprayer that is attached to a jar, and I buy the big canister of tube like packets inside to refill it. My Basjoo are about 2 feet tall so far, and sprouted in April, we are having very unusual cloudy weather for the last month (almost 4 weeks straight) or they would be taller than that, they are saying this is the most rain we have had ever in the month of may lol.

Re: new basjooer
I go to the farm / irrigation supply warehouse and get a 50 lb sack of urea and a 50 lb bag of potash . I also stay well stocked in steer & chicken manure
On a quiet day you can put your ear to the ground and hear them grow
