I just went out to the local Home depot and they had this new rack of nana trees. I picked up a pretty lil tree and just had to have it. The tag says its a Dwarf Nino but I don't put faith in there nana knowledge.







Can anyone verify by these pics if it is a Nino?

My first nana was one i found last year on clarence at home depot. The tag on it said "basjoo". Once I found this wonerful site I compared members pictures of Dwarf Cavendish to this mystery tree. My tree looked like everyother Dwarf Cavendish. Well I followed all of your wonderful tips on growing the nana and even after wintering it in the sunroom, to my surprise I actually made it survive the winter. Fast foward to April 1st. The weather is great and the lows at night are above 40 degrees. I put the tree outside still in the pot. All was good for 2 weeks. Almost over night it turned brown and died. It never frosted or got below 40 recently. Well lucky for me I still am reading old threads because I was going to throw it away, but lo and behold this week I saw green..Yeaaaaaa I think its coming back..I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Well, I work in the Home Depot garden department in San Diego. Any labeling problems are due to the supplier, in this case Hines Horticulture. When I find something I know is wrong, I write the correct name in black Sharpie on the label.

I wasn't trying to put down anybody that works there, The person who assisted me was about 17 to 18 years old and had no idea what I was asking him when I questioned him about them. The combination of me not knowing much about bananas and his knowledge of them, assisted in me questioning if this was a Dwarf Nino.

I just Googled Hines Horticulture's website and saw their banana listings and saw that they had three - Coccinea, Dwarf Niño, and Gran Nain. All their descriptions match each pertinent variety, however the accompanying photos do not match. The coccinea shows pink bloom rather than red. The D. Niño do not have the black coloration in the Pstem and petioles. The Gran Nain looks more like Zebrina, or at the very least, a High Colo Mini, but the description says "solid green". Descriptions appear to be cribbed from Agristarts.

The fruits in the photo of the D. Niño appear to be correct. But the plant in your photo do not show the black markings that the grower describes in his ad. I guess you need to wait until your plant blooms and fruits t really find out.

Chong, your detective work on Hines pretty much sums up my experiences with their plant labelings over the years. La Verne sometimes has similar problems, most notably with guavas and persimmons. In direct contrast are the wholesalers Monrovia, Dave Wilson, and San Marcos Growers.

They are going to have a "Mango Tango" Festival in your neck of the woods there on Sunday, 1-3 PM. I spoke with the host and hostess. Very hospitable people! Bob & Kitty Miller's garden (Mt. Helix) 4502 Conrad Dr., La Mesa CA 91941, phone # 619.460.5943) Wish I could go. They are going to have grafting and air layering demonstrations. They are suggesting to buy Manila mangoes from HD to use as rootstock, and members of CRFG and Rare Fruit News Online will be contributing scion wood. Don't know if you know Leo Manuel, he's giving a demo on guava air layering techniques.

Sorry for the off-topic comments, people. But I;m so excited about it, though I can't go. Just hope people in the San Diego area will be interested. You might even get your picture in the local newsletter. They will have free treats! Mangoes galore!

Went to our local HD tonight and they had about 50 banana plants, mostly those same labeled as Dwarf nino like yours, some grand nain, and a few red abyssinian ensetes. Gonna check Lowes and see what they have too.

My HD store has Dwarf Cavendish, Ice Cream aka Blue Java, Orinoco, Zebrina, and 2 large Ensetes in 14" boxes. I'll bet they are gone by the end of Saturday.

I went to HD today and they had even more banana's. These were smaller but they were not labled as the banana type it just says "southern tropical" . They look identical to the larger Dwarf Nino's that they have...They were priced for $9.97 so I couldn't pass up on that, I had to buy one. That UPC is not in our system.
The edible bananas we are selling all come from the wholesaler La Verne.
Of the dozen or so we received yesterday there is only one Dwarf Cavendish left as of close today (Saturday).
