Default Musa Velutina "harvest time"

Hi All

Just wanted to share that my velutina plant flowered 2 and a half months ago and the fruits are starting to ripen. It's not much but 9 fingers are maturing in zone 6 (PA). The fruit is loaded with seeds - my first time getting to see fruit like that.

Have a good weekend!

It smells and and looks like a tiny banana. The peel starts to split by itself over a few days. The fruit is so full of seeds that you don't have much material for tasting. So far one finger ripened and perhaps I picked it early.

So I don't have a good taste report yet and I still have 8 more fingers to try when they ripen....

I will post a putupi update in a few days. The plant looks like a spartan but I didn't take a picture yet.

Mike, sorry to hear that!

Just a follow up on the fruit 'taste report'. There is practically nothing to eat here and little to taste. From the pictures below, it might seem like you can 'work around' the seeds but that wasn't the case for me. Most of the fruit sticks to the seeds and the seeds are extremely hard. I tried them and was careful not to break a tooth! I did get a familiar banana taste and I was able to eat about a Jelly Bean size of fruit from each tiny banana. It certainly was a novelty to finally get to see a banana with seeds inside, so I'm glad I had the chance. I won't be tasting again unless they are seedless or mostly seedless (haha).

Just a thought, perhaps the fruit is a little bigger in the tropics so maybe they can get to eat more but it seems like there would be much better varieties.

Erik

i have ordered seeds from the US before (from native seed search)
no phyto or anything required.. but no worries
there is a retailer up here i have bought plants from in the past who carry this plant(flora exotica)
i may even have some growing already... i had a bunch of banana seeds that werent doing much so i put them all in one pot and then ignored it.. eventually a bunch of plants sprouted but i am unsure which ones they are
musa velutina were among the ones which were in the pot

thanks for the reply and no worries

Looking very healthy for surviving the winter!

Based on my plants, the leaf/p-stem sizes look about right for a smaller banana plant like the velutina. You will know in a year or so depending on growing conditions.

the stem is somewhat stripey and the underside of an unfurling leaf is redish

No worries! This plant doesn't look like a traditional velutina to me. The underside of my leaves are not red. There is just a slight pink coloration on my p-stems. My stems don't have the white stripes or the chalky powder. This could be some velutina hybrid - maybe markuana or such....

thanks geissene!
looks like i need to keep trying to get velutina
i threw a whole bunch of velutina seeds in a community pot a month or two ago.. nothing yet
i have my heat mat going for some other seeds.. i might put some velutina seed on there as well and see if that helps
i went back to my RPS invoices and after ruling out ones like ensete i googled images of the remaining types
some possible options are:
musa helens hybrid, musa thomsonii and musa yunnanensis (and some others which werent quite as good of match)
the leaves are slightly pointed so maybe the yunnanensis...
thanks for the help
