Default Is this Musa stalk dead?

Hello...

I was hoping for some advice on whether or not this stalk is dead. It sure looks like it with how black it is. I wrapped it very well for the winter, but I fear water was able to get into it during the frost. I live in NC, 7a. It was not that bad of a winter either.

Looking at the outside of the stalk, I am not sure if there is anything to save or not, but wanted to turn to the experts.

Thanks for the help.

Tom

It certainly doesn't look too good....maybe whack another foot down and check the core...see if it is rotten or green. Good luck..

Thank you for the reply. I did cut off about 1.25 feet and the center is white and wet. Seems much healthier, but I guess I will need to see what happens. Is there anything I need to do with that white center or just wait to see if a leak comes out?

Give the stem the sniff test.
If it smells bad cut some more off.
Sometimes with those plants if you cut the stem it is just enough to release the krakken.
