Default Musa basjoo...too late to plant in Zone 7?

Hello all, I'm right outside Wichita, Kansas (zone 7a)..and I was wondering if it is too late in the season to plant some 10-12" musa basjoo...our first frost is usually the last week of October to the first week of November...should I keep these plants in pots until next spring? Thanks!!

I would, give them a nice big pot to stretch out and relax in. Nothing like having a naner for a house plant over winter. musa basjoo is a cold hardy banana, however I like them to be at least 18 months old or older before I expose them to winter.

For 12" basjoo 8-25 gal. bigger the better... Please keep us updated as to the condition and well-being. Heat mat maybe your best friend. Gooood Luck!

Listen to Jeff and Justin. They are almost as wise as your mom.

You might get away with planting and wintering it outside with good protection, in a
cinch, but if you have a spot near a window indoors, that would be the better approach.
As an added benefit it will continue to grow, although at a slower rate, and when
the time comes to plant tomatoes in your area, move a plant, which has grown over
winter, instead of regressed outside.

It is not going to overwhelm your living room with the limited available light.

Good luck,
Olaf

I agree you should wait. I'm in zone 7 NJ & I've planted them in August and they didn't return. My well-established musa basjoo always return even without mulching over winter.

all the more reason to order MORE bananas, and let them veg indoors. Get a jump start on next spring. I found a cheap flouresent hood at a hydroponics store for about $40 that puts out a good amount of light. Pair that up with a heat mat and you will be rock'n

Just tossing this in the fray............for the Basjoo grower.
This garden is on the way home from work and I stop and walk through it often.
Locally it is my benchmark for hosta, ferns and many other giant woodland plants.

Hibernating a basjoo
