Question Musa basjoo is growing branches!

Well not exactly, but it has been sending out pups that are at or above, ground level.

What's up with that? How are they going to root?

I had this happen. I added some soil and the pups rooted fine. Just mound it up around the pstem. You will have pups with roots in no time.

Same here. All my pups were above ground level. I added soil and they rooted pretty quickly.

I think in warmer places this could be normal over time and the corm grows out of the ground, as evidenced by this photo.

I think that is the sign of an old mat and overcrowding. Add some solid to your plant.

This plant went in the ground this spring.

Is this evidence of a really good specimen that wants to raise the corm, then?

Im guessing you just planted it too shallow. I bury my basjoo almost 2' deep to help protect from the frost.

It's planted 6"; more than enough for the winters here. Two feet should survive in Nome, AK!

In the first pic, you can see the plant in its entirety.

This one is a closeup of the base, showing the "branch" that is emerging, along with two normal pups below ground..

Thats a nice plant. Looks like its a pup coming off the top of the corm. I usually cut the high ones off and keep the deepest rooted pups. They are super easy to remove for a friend as well!

Gonna let everything winter over in its current location. Too late to dig out new pups. I'm also going to let the "branch" pup stay as is and see what it does next year. I'd love to see a nanner with a branch!

Well, I put dirt around the base as suggested, and then covered with a lot of wood shavings. When they got to be a foot+ in height, I dug all 4 out and potted to winter over in the back hall. They're all sword suckers now, and look great!
