Mother of seeds coming back!!!
For all of you that got seeds of the Musa velutina over the past two years, here is the mother mat coming back for another year!!! It is really starting to take off. Hate that we are to get to around 33F Monday and Tuesday morning. Bit of burn will be knocking her back just a bit, but she will do fine...

They get about 10'-11' overall height which is a bit larger than what I understand some others get with theirs for whatever reason... The minimum temps I saw this past winter was around 11F for two nights straight and only about 28F for a high on the day in between. I am enjoying mid May temps right now, but calling for a cool down here by Sunday. Only about 3 days with lows in the mid 30's and then back up to upper 40's for lows and near 70 for highs by the end of next week. Hopefully this will be the last of our cold weather for the summer... |

The mat, from my understanding, is basically the entire clump of bananas. This velutina "mat" is from a one gallon plant that I planted in spring '05. I leave it in the ground year round where it dies to the ground and resprouts every spring. After the pstem that produces fruit is finished, it dies and pups from the corm take over. I have probably divided this mat and sold, traded, etc. about twice as much of it as it is now. If that confuses you, I'm sorry, kinda confused myself. What I am trying to say is that I have divided off about twice as much of this mat as there is in place right now... The musa velutina is quite hardy and would probably do well for you in KY if you mulched it with at least 4-6" of mulch... Hope this helped... Take care... Randy |

Re: Mother of seeds coming back!!!
Thanks, Dean...
Got down to 40F this morning and calling for around 34F tonight, but then starting to warm back up here. I covered them with frost cloth yesterday and will leave it on until tomorrow afternoon. This weather wouldn't kill them, just nip them back and I decided to try and keep them from being set back any. Should be another good year for them and the other plants I have going out back... Re: Mother of seeds coming back!!!
Randy, the division I got from you last year that went into the UT Gardens returned a couple of weeks ago also. Perhaps my luck with Musa velutina surviving the winters here has changed for the better! I'm two for two this year. More cold-hardy bananas going into the gardens this year!
