Default Making progress in Nebraska

I had all of these guys growing in the basement, screwed up most of the leaves trying to haul them out, then I trimmed more. Built myself a nice little area in the back. This is my second year of trying to plant my Basjoo and Zebrina in the ground, and my first year doing it at the beginning of the growing season. Based on my growth already this spring, I'm hoping to see a 10 foot Basjoo by the end of the summer!

Still haven't killed all that creeping charlie. . .

Lookin' good! I found that Bayer Advanced Weed and Crabgrass Killer wipes out Creeping Charlie. I was an Ortho Weed-B-Gone man for years but not any more, that stuff is great. One day I was in Lowe's and a man claiming to be a chemist from Bayer was there and gave me a speel and I thought what the heck and man does it work. Even if it didn't he was a very nice fella and we had good conversation.

New leaves on the Basjoo all have a nice red line running down the midrib, they're getting really happy!

Taken from my deck, I expect this will be impossible later with the growth I'm seeing.

Anyway, Top-Down Banana-Shot! (that sounds dirty!)

Another week or so of growth. Elephant ears are kickin' in, and Zebrina color is improving even more!

Lost a leaf or two off the big basjoo, otherwise everything is going crazy with all the rain and heat. (Lot's of mid 90's, high humidity, 4.5" of rain on Saturday!)

Charlie is still creeping. . .

Well, maybe I won't hit 10 feet tall, but the patch is nearly 10 feet wide. . . that counts, right?

Honestly, I sprinkled some paltry amount rose pellet slow release fertilizer back in May.

Since then, nothing.

I just water it a bit when I'm watering the potted plants on the deck. Otherwise it just gets rainwater.

It will be interesting to see how interwoven everything is when I dig it up this fall to put away for the winter...

I'm kinda sad that I'm going to have to cut and dig these guys soon.

Any advice on bare-rooting these in the cellar? Seems everybody is arguing about what to wrap them in (or don't wrap, and definitely not plastic) to put them in the dark. I was just going to prop them up in a 5 gallon bucket in the corner of the coldest part of the basement until spring.

Anybody water once or twice over the winter months? These will be inside for nearly 6 months until the last frost next year.

Bit of a color change after the temps dropped to the low 30's last weekend.
