Default Identification/Advice needed for friend

One of my high school classmates is growing bananas as well up here in NY. He's had it potted for three years but has not had as much luck. When I posted pics on FB, he quickly responded and asked me for help. Since I'm new at this, I am turning to you guys. He has one unknown variety which has produced multiple pups. He believes that the pups are draining/killing the mother. The first pic is the original mother (that dead looking thing on the ground by the amp), the second is the most successful pup with a pup of its own. He's looking for advice and also possible identification. From my understanding, the plants are kept indoors year-round. Thanks for any help!

Soil looks pretty dry to me. Being indoors in NY with the heat running half the year and sitting in the sunny window will wear them out if they dont get water, not too much though. Moist, not wet. Just my two pennies worth.

Soil does look dry. What kind of watering plan do those plants get? Also as the plant gets bigger, the pot needs to get bigger. Just my 2.

Where did he get his banana? If he has a tag, that's a great way to find out more information; if received from another grower that can also help with ID. That said, mottling on leaves and lot of pups lead me to believe he has a Dwarf Cavendish. I don't grow anything (save a bit of mold) inside so can't help with that aspect.
