How to best ensure Basjoo pups will survive?
Hello! I am still learning how to divide my basjoo. Last summer I only had 1 out of 3 divided pups survive, so I am trying to figure out the magic tricks to make sure they do well! The one that was in the ground in a sunny location came back, the one in the ground in a partly sunny location did not come back, and the potted one (standard potting soil) did not survive. I dug up 4 pups yesterday and potted them in regular potting soil, but now I am second guessing how to proceed. I wasn't terribly successful at getting many roots with the bulb (is bulb the right term?), so I am a little worried.
Would it be helpful to put them in a little standing water? Should I repot in sand? Perhaps some seaweed fertilizer? And other tricks to make them survive? Thanks for your help!! Here's some photos of my original plant for tax. ![]() ![]() |
Re: How to best ensure Basjoo pups will survive?
the bulb is referred to as a corm
once you water youre potting medium you should allow it to dry out a fair bit at which point hopefully there are signs of new growth ...then give it some water no fertilizer at this stage i put mine in the shade for a day or two and start bringing them further into the sun as the week/ weeks progress other people have different methods which work well also like using better draining media to avoid overwatering which could be what caused your pups to die just a guess keep trying... soon you will have way too many :) |
Re: How to best ensure Basjoo pups will survive?
Use Palm and Cactus soil in a pot to avoid over saturating with water.
When you split the pups, make sure it is about 2-3ft high. The larger ones will take hold better in their new home as they have better leafs. Split too early and the growth will be painfully slow. Basjoo are pretty resilient. Good luck! |

Thanks all! I didn't realize too much water could be a bad thing. I thought maybe I didn't water last year's divisions enough....Wish me luck!!!

Well darn, the weather unexpectedly turned cooler and we got quite a downpour of rain! I hope that doesn't mess my divisions up too much!
