Going Bananas in Maryland
I bought these four in Spring 2020. 2 Dwarf Namwa and 2 Dwarf Orinoco. They're all between 3-5ft tall. I brought them inside in the fall and they've been in my grow room. I reported them into full size garbage cans. Their containers are pretty big and the soil medium is potting soil, coconut coir and worm castings. I will take them outside after our last frost date.
1. I am wondering if I'll have a better chance getting them to fruit this year by planting them? Or should I leave them be? 2. If I leave them in their containers, will the added height make them too susceptible to wind? Any advice is appreciated! |
Re: Going Bananas in Maryland
I'm growing bananas in PA and I would NOT put them in the ground. If you do, you will think it's the best decision you have ever made. Those plants will grow and grow and grow...so fast you'll swear you can see it happen before you eyes. BUT, September rolls around and the "dig up" begins. If you plant the plants back in pots, those beautiful plants will struggle to recover from the shock and many might not (although you might be able to save the pups). I did this three years ago and I was dumbfounded and disappointed when their growth came to a screeching halt...maybe someone has had better luck the I did and they will post a wonderful success story!

Re: Going Bananas in Maryland
Our growing season in MD is too short to plant them in the ground. The only ones I would plant would be the hardy Basjoos. All mine are in large pots that I winterize under grow lights to keep them warm and growing over the winter.
