has anyone ever tried to store corms in the fridge? Whats the opinion on this would it work?

I would worry about it rotting to death.. Better off in a pot in S. facing window.. :^)

I don't know about a fridge, but I stored a fairly large orinoco corm in a plastic bag inside the crawlspace of my house. When I retrieved it, it was a little slimy. I cleaned it up, cut off some mushy parts, and put it in soil; it grew just fine. I've never monitored the temperature in the crawlspace, but I would guess the temps range from upper 30'sF to 50's during a zone 7 winter. A fridge runs around 39F. If you have an extra banana plant that you don't mind sacrificing, you ought to try the refrigerator thing. I would wrap the corm up in some type of plastic. Do NOT add any extra moisture to the plastic container. The corm should have plenty and you don't want it to rot. Place it in the vegetable crisper since its slightly less cool than the upper portion of the fridge. You may want to check on it once or twice a month. If it shows signs of decay, you should clean it up and pot it immediately.

If you want to make the biggest, cheapest fridge talk to beer home brewers. They know how to make a "keg cooler" out of an inexpensive chest freezer. Basically a thermostat is placed in the cooler, and thru the little drain plug a wire goes out that interupts the normal power suppy, so that the the cooler only cools when it is in the range set by the thermostat. A friend made one for me, and it runs on about the same juice as a light bulb.

Thanks for the input,where i live I have tried everything and it seems that are rollercoaster temps make crawlspaces and sheds not workout to good for some varietys.There are no basements.
I am going to try a Ensete,basjoo and a V.c. out in the fridge I will trim everything and maybe let them dry out a few days.these three never seem to overwinter good for me,they dont die the just dont grow. I will post on how it goes,temps are still warm so I will leave them inground another week or so.

I'm trying that this winter with a M. itinerans corm. I've let it dry out, and I'm going to wrap it in newspaper and store it in the crisper. I figure it's about the same temperature in my crawlspace, and this way I'll know that it is nice and dry. I'll monitor the newspaper on a weekly basis to make sure it is staying dry.

I had to Bail on fridge storage. After a little time in fridge I put the small corms in the shed in a box.I potted a V.C. ,Sdc,and a ensete in the house a month ago and there all growing good now.
The V.C. i was ready to give up on but now it is showing good progress, it is a few years old and has never recovered from the first year of overwintering. I trimmed all roots and stem and the corm was the size of a plum. The plant is now on its 6 leaf so maybe this year it will grow like a regular plant.
