Hey maesy,
you may be right. On the other hand i need them in case the bigger stem goes in flower without any significant number of leaves.
Some time ago, however, i did read something about the fact that as the plants become bigger, the speed of the emission of new leaves become slower and slower. So this may be normal? Hopefully.

Hi! I'm updating this because asacomm asking for updates, and i think that the happening of last few months may be of interest for him.

The main pstem of last year choked. It took quote some time for me before i realized that and i think i almost lose it. At the end of may i decided for a substantial cut on it to attempt to resume its growth, and it worked! I cut about 60 cm (2 ft) making it just 180 cm tall (6 ft). The stem immediatly resumed its growth, put out 4 smallish leaves, and later (yesterday) it started to send out a flag leaf.

In the meatime all the stem started to show some kind of nutritional deficiency. I can tell you more because i haven't identified what is this, most likely candidate look boron to me, bu i'm unsure.
I think this may be due the huge amount of living tissue destroyed by cold, that removed every leaf at once. This is normal also for my other bananas, but they get replanted every year in a fertilized soil, while this mat hasnt been fertilized as much.
New pups seem healthy tough.
