Do I need to add moss or soil??

I just dug up all my Bananas from the yard- Orinoco, DC, and IC- and have them trimmed and standing in Long boxes(boxes we use to ship bundles of leather) in the Garage. I didn't keep any soil on them but I'm wondering if I need to add some sort of material Like Sphagnum moss around the roots?

I don't; I just leave them totally bare. However, I've seen others here successfully wrap around the base (and p-stem sometimes). So maybe someone who does that will add their views.
