dig or wrap up , very confused? musa basjoo kent uk

i have one musa basjoo, has done considerable well and is still putting out new shoots, its right in the corner of my garden near the wall and quite sheltered. Frost has hit it a tiny bit but didnt see any damage as of yet..

1. do i just dig the fella up and bring it inside the conservatory? (this could be better for deviding pups in spring), if so do i trim any of the leaves back once potted up???

2. shall i wrap it in straw with a wire cage round it? do i cut all the leaves back or let them die off??

3. last question- if i remove a pup in spring will this pup once large enough produce pups of its own?

many thanks if u can answer all questions.

Hi parkeey
How big is the basjoo in question?and where are you in kent?
If its big enough you should get away without protecting it at all.Mine do,but mine is a very large established clump which helps, lol
Anyway,if its still quite small, then I'd wait til the frosts take out its leaves, then wrap it in horticultural fleece. The chicken wire cage filed with straw isn't really all that necesary for Kent, unless of course you're in a frost hollow(are you?)
Or you could lift it if you if you wanted to play it really safe.
Take care

.

You said you already had a frost? What is the average temp in the conservatory/sunroom?
I dug mine up & brought them in my sunroom with night temps around upper 40's - low 50's (in S.R.). I leave all the leaves on & only give water to moisten - not too wet. It will go semi-dormant & still grow but very slowly.
Dig the pups out in spring, and yes, they will get pups too.
Or, you can leave it in ground & wrap insulation around it. I don't know what zone you're in or how cold it gets there. If you do this you can cut some leaves off or they will just freeze & die & grow more in spring.
I pot mine up because I want them to grow as much as possible in winter in hopes that maybe it'll flower sooner.
