D.Orinoco & D.Brazilian died
My D.orinoco and D.Brazilian could not overwinter and died even with the
anti-cold protections with straw mats. The highesgt and lowest temperatures were as follows: 12/10 12/20 12/31 01/10 01/20 01/31 02/10 02/20 02/29 03/10 03/20 03/31 H 62 59 57 59 54 54 52 54 62 64 66 68 L 34 32 32 29 29 25 27 21 27 29 41 37 I did not imagined that the both bananas failed to overwinter under these temperatures as they have been considered as one of the cold hardiest bananas. Although I do understand that the temperature is not only reason of the failure, but in fact they were not cold hardy as being told. |

Here is a picture how D.Orinoco died.

Re: D.Orinoco & D.Brazilian died
i am sorry to hear that about your nanas. almost made me want to cry.

Re: D.Orinoco & D.Brazilian died
Where did you get your plants?
Stan, maybe there are some local variations between the US "types" of Dwarf Brazilian & Orinoco and Asian "type" Dwarf Brazilian & Orinoco? I have heard even landraces of bananas can develop into "sports", such as the legendary "California Gold". Just a thought! This is pretty strange, as I have heard of both these plants surviving (wrapped in mulch and hay) as far north as Pennsylvania in the continental US. Erlend |

sorry to hear that about your nanas, maybe they will regrow out of the roots ? :D

Re: D.Orinoco & D.Brazilian died
Hi Erlend,
I bought them in the local market. But as you sharply pointed, I have always been suspecting from where they were imported and I was told that they came from US most probablly via Thailand in order to simplifying import pro- cedures. Or they came from Thailand where they were TCultured. Anyway there is no way to confirm it. I have experienced and been wondering why only species of English names of bananas such as D.Orinoco, D.Brazilian,Williams Hybrid and Rajapuri(all of them were TC plnats) died under the aforementioned temperatures that don't seem severe to those bananas. Why? |
Re: D.Orinoco & D.Brazilian died
For zone 9b that is weird!
|
Re: D.Orinoco & D.Brazilian died
don't give up. maybe there will be life from the corm. don't overwater until and if you see signs of life. good luck :bananajoy:

Re: D.Orinoco & D.Brazilian died
Tropicallvr, thanx for your comment.
Yes, it really is weird and strange that they died under those conditions. It might be possible that several types of TC plants are sold under the same name, for instance D.Orinoco etc. that show different characteristics. But I just don't know why they died. |
Re: D.Orinoco & D.Brazilian died
That doesn't look dead to me. Give it time with very little to no water and it may send up pups!

Re: D.Orinoco & D.Brazilian died
Hi Momoese,
In fact, it is dead and rotten. The question is why. It is reported that this species overwintered without any protection in Knoxville, TN in zone 7a, but why not in zone 9b with reasonable protections. It is funny and strange. |
Re: D.Orinoco & D.Brazilian died
Perhaps the it was too wet for too long and the protection kept it from breathing allowing it to rot.
|
Re: D.Orinoco & D.Brazilian died
Thanks, Momoese,
I think your point could be one of the main reasons, and I also think so. |
Re: D.Orinoco & D.Brazilian died
Money says it drowned and rotted. I have both of these same bananas in the ground at my 8A/B house. The D. Orinico got rott in the pseudostem but is pushing leaves again. The D. Brazilian is tall and pushing leaves.

Re: D.Orinoco & D.Brazilian died
In additon to D.Orinoco and D.Brazilian, Rajapuri and Williams also died.
They all were TC plants. Only Cardaba which was pup, not TC survived. They say the TC pants were imported from the States but I suspect that there is a possibility that they were mislabelled and were not those species. Then this issue can be explained. Or any thoughts? |
Re: D.Orinoco & D.Brazilian died
I'm with Mitchell and mm4birds - don't give up yet and keep them as dry as you can. They could be alive under the ground and waiting to produce a pup!
