Wow, that sure looks awesome back there. I really want to put a tiki bar in my backyard too.

Your Lantana are absolutely beautiful. Sadly, mine didn't grow back this year.

John --- Lots of protection for the palms . The basjoos are the only bananas I leave in the ground . The rest I dig and store in the basement and some I pot and store in the house ...

I was born and raised (actually it's 'reared', but I hate to say that-LOL) in the Alleghenys, so I know what work this must take for you to accomplish. Kudos to you for your efforts! 90% of the people who live in the tropics don't have a yard that looks this nice. Bravo!

Very nice.
But you should move to Tahiti.

Great pictures, fabulous yard. I really like the blend of different plants.
Your yard is something I would aspire to, if I had a larger property :)

You managed to capture the lushness of the tropics in a 6b HZ

Thanks for showing it to us.

Wow..nice yard indeed! Will you come build me a tiki bar like that for my yard in Sarasota, FL? While you're at it, I could use a pool too! lol

WOW!!! That's awesome! Very nice job, indeed. That's about as tropical as it gets. Are those real palm fronds on your tiki bar or is it a synthetic faux palm thatch? I just recently learned that there was a synthetic fake palm frond used for thatch and I've been curious how it looks. Your's looks great, so I'm hoping it is synthetic. Unless, of course, there is a way to get the real stuff and make it last (like with something like Thompson's water seal). So, what is your secret?

Wow awesome garden! You leave the Pindo in the ground - do you provide heat for the palms?

Re: A Couple Backyard Pics From PA

Rob --- The thatch is the real deal . I don't think the synthetic stuff looks all that great but , it does have like a 20 year warranty . The biggest downside is it is very expensive ...
I guess the secret is this has only been on here for a little over a year . Seriously it needs to be well supported from the bottom (I used PT lattice on the tiki bar and wire fencing on the palapa) and it helps to put bird netting over the complete roof to help keep the fronds from lifting . Also it needs to have good air flow through the thatch or it will quickly rot . On the tiki bar I used thatch that comes in 30"x60' rolls for around the edge and then reed fencing available at HD for the the main part of the roof .
I thought about trying Thomson's water seal but , decided to just try it without . I think if the thatch would last for 5 years this way I would be very happy !

CT Palms --- Yes , I do heat the palms with rope lights in enclosures ...

Well, thanks for the info. I was hoping you'd say that all you had to do was spray Thompson's water seal on the real fronds and expect them to last 20 years! The fake stuff probably doesn't look nearly as good. In the tropics finding lots of coconut fronds to make into thatch is pretty easy and cheap and of course it looks awesome! I might have to experiment with some real palm fronds to find a long lasting solution. You'd think there would be some sort of pressure treated version. Maybe I'll invent it.

Beautiful! I guess I need to get into palms more. At least I have a place to put them for winter.
