Default Canda Hardy Bananas?

Hi, I was wondering if there is a banana type that can survive in Canada? I'm in zone 3. What edible bananas can survive here and what ornamental bananas can survive here? Thank You!

In your home over the winter w/ some South window light or light augmentation, or heated greenhouse even. :^)

Technically none, but you can grow them outdoors if it is warm enough then bring them indoors or somewhere that doesn't freeze during the winter. You can grow them in pots indoors throughout the year, or you can bring them to dormancy in the winter wherever the temps are below 55 and above 35.

You can forget about fruit, unless you have a heated greenhouse. That has only an outside
chance in a few spots in coastal BC. HZ 3 suggests, that you live ‘up high’, either in the
mountains, or up north. In the mountains you may get by with natural light indoors if you
live below the 47^ latitude.
If you live up north., I doubt very much, that natural light would keep your plant going
through the short winter daylight hours and the frost free period is much too short to let
the plant recover from the winter degeneration.

The most cold hardy banana by consensus appears to be the Musa Basjoo rated to have a
corm hardy to HZ5. But don’t count on it, unless you do some heavy duty mulching.

Sorry,
Olaf

If you really take care of it and baby with with plenty light, you can grow and fruit one indoors. I've known plenty people from as crazy climates and as north of locations who are able to fruit things even more difficult and time consuming than bananas.

I wonder how many feet deep would a basjoo corm have to be to survive severe freezing in zone 3? over 2-3 feet? Doesn't soil temperature moderate after a certain depth?

Not THAT funny. Canada has some spots with HZ9. Mostly on the west coast of Vancouver island
as well as the west coast of the BC mainland; even as far up north as the queen Charlotte Island,
at a latitude of more than 53^

It'll never dig itself out from that depth. Water mains should be 8 feet deep there in order to
ensure no freeze-up

I'm thinking if a plant needs over winter protection it is not hardy for that zone. If I grow a banana plant in a greenhouse/house in zone 6 is it grown in zone 6 ? I don't think it is
