Good luck with the flag leaf. We are hoping for several this month and may get to enjoy a harvest. Good growing and stay healthy.

Yours is definitely there Congrats!

Here is my Cali Gold from Pre flag to flag leaf.
They seems to take a long time in California to ripen about 7 months, but worth the wait. Try them with Cooked butter as a Maduros You love it.

Do you guys with experience know when it's a pre-flag leaf coming out or do you label it that when the leaf after is the obvious flag? How is a pre-flag different other that the leaves are all incredibly bunched up at that point?

It will be smaller then the normal size leaf for that variety i've noticed about half the size. The pre flag leaf will come just before the even shorter stout leaf known as the flag leaf, which carries the flower. if you look at the pics above its shows the emgergence of both for the Cali Gold. I will have a klotek with the same scenario, which I will put it up in the what blooming section in the next week to show that variety. Hope this helps.

I'd say that's about right on average. But there is quite a bit of variation among varieties. Some have a very small pre-flag leaf and some are more like 3/4 the size of a normal leaf -- and then you're not so sure if it is the pre-flag leaf or not.

Look for the p-stem at the top of the plant getting noticeably thicker, too, as a clue that a bloom is impending.

That plant is so short that some of those bananas are going to be sitting on the ground when all is said and done!

Thats crazy cool about both. My basjoo is alittle taller but p-stem looks thinner. For three weeks not much activity since the flower leaf, but the other two parts are getting fatter.

This is one of those myths that seems to keep getting repeated, but never with any photos.

If this was true, don't ya think there would be at least one photo somewhere.

The Pre Flag Leaf will be out and the Flag Leaf will probably be showing before you'll notice any swelling, but the swelling and the bloom is a good way of confirming the Pre Flag & Flag Leaves.

Mitchel has posted at least one good photo of this -- and didn't you, too ("stretch marks"). You just stated it wasn't a myth -- in your third paragraph. True, it's only noticeable just before the bloom is about to emerge.
