The Pre Flag Leaf will be out and the Flag Leaf will probably be showing before you'll notice any swelling, but the swelling and the bloom is a good way of confirming the Pre Flag & Flag Leaves.

The fact that the top of the pseudostem swells during bud emergence is normal.

The myth is when someone implies it to be a useful indicator. If someone is unable to notice the Pre Flag or Flag Leaf, they're probably not going to notice the swelling. Most experienced growers will notice the Flags days earlier and pay no attention to any swelling.

In the photo you mentioned, the Pre Flag was clearly visible well in advance of any swelling.

This photo is actually more relevant.

This is one of the larger Rhino Horns I've grown and I inspected it closely before transplanting and if I knew it was less than 100 hours away from bud emergence I would have just cut it down instead of moving it.

At the time, I did not know the Cigar Leaf was also the Pre Flag Leaf. This will most likely be a monster of a bud, but there was no apparent swelling.

Hi Friends,

My Cali. Gold of today in a 60L(16gal) plastic container. It began to flower
only in 36 months after the pup plantation and produces 4 hands of banana
of which total fingers are only 32. Unprolific indeed?!

Caligold is an Orinoco type. They are not known for being large producers.
