Basjoo Question

I think I am ready to get started with my plantation. My son informed me that I need to get the Basjoo as it will grow the best in Ohio weather. Can anyone tell me where I can obtain the plant/seeds. There is no time like the present to see if I have a yellow thumb.

Thanks to all that respond.

Re: Basjoo Question

Last year I found a couple of Basjoos at my local Lowes hardware store, they were very healthy and about $12.00 ea. They are almost 6 ft tall at the present. Good luck, keep us posted.

i would look locally at lowes, home depot and walmart..get what ever is cheap since you are starting out. i wouldnt advise you to spend anymore than $20.00 the first year..see you dont want to spend a lot of money on your first banana pup..if you kill it,you wont be so disgusted..believe me its a learning process and you probably will make not a few,but many mistakes.no matter how much advice and no matter how much you read about bananas you will learn the most by making mistakes.. good luck.

Re: Basjoo Question

I've seen them at some of the local nurseries here in Toledo. Home Depot didn't have any this weekend. Haven't been to Lowes or WalMart. I'd say Basjoo is a great plant to start with and if any thing its too easy. During the growing season here with our sandy soil you can't over water. Throw some fertilizer on every few weeks keep it watered and watch it put out a leaf every week. As it starts to put out pups you can pull them off and give them to friends or start a mat. Fun easy plant and it looks sooooooooooo tropical!

Re: Basjoo Question

Hi Tania and welcome to our craziness!!! Basjoo would do great in our zone, but no matter what type you get whether it's basjoo or Ice cream or a cavendish, they will need ignorant amounts of winter protection. Another winter time decision requires either a 50/50 chance of leaving the plant in-ground and trying to keep it warm enough to not totally die OR, de-leaf it and dig it up before the first frost. I am over in youngstown right on the 5a/5b/6a (wierd) area and last winter I kept my dwarf cavendish indoors in a pot, this year I'm planting my 3 newest trees out in the ground and digging them up in the fall.

Just some things to think about.

Howdy fellow ohioian, Basjoo is a great choice. Another would be dwarf orinoco or the bigger orinoco if you want fruit... but you have to diggem at the end of the year & throw them down in the basement (cold storage). I just bought some from wellspringgardens off of ebay & only took a week to come in....
