Basjoo growth progress

Dates are on the pictures. It's growing like a weed!

Hmm, date didn't work on last one, but its today, 7/11/08.

Now I just need to know when they will start adding height. Do they grow upwards or do they only grow by adding new leaves? At this rate, to get 10 feet tall it'll need 100 leaves.

Great looking basjoo banana. It is growing nicely. All bananas grow by adding new leaves which increases the height of the pseudostem. You'll be surprised at how quickly they can roll out a leaf and increase in mass. Each leaf should get larger in size, and this will help the corm (root) get larger and more developed.

I haven't grown Basjoo, but my tall banana varieties (Orinoco and Ice Cream) really accelerate. Once you start getting big leaves, it will feel like a whole new ballgame.

Awesome wxman! It's really healthy. My basjoo finally is getting better. I saw another leaf coming out this morning. However, the other basjoo is not but was told that it will recover.

Very nice Wxman! I remember when you first posted the photos of your beds / palms & bananas over on gardenweb! Your Bananas were soooooo small! They are really starting to put on some good growth now. I cant wait to see how well everything overwinters for you. What are you planning to do for protection? Are yours just regular old Musa Basjoos?

Lookin good!

Good luck with it!

Tim,

I noticed that you are in zone 5 ( as am I but I'm in Canada ). I am curious to know how you plan to overwinter your bananas this winter.
- when do you plan to prepare them for winter? :bed:

- will you be leaving them in ground?

- if not, where do you plan to store them and how?

- if so, how are you planning to protect them from our nasty winters?

any information would be appreciated. There are some good tutorials here, and some differing opinions. I am curious what you are planning to do.
