basjoo edges turn black

I have two basjoos in the ground that are doing great. My "insurance" potted basjoo is growing great , but after each leaf is unfurled for about a week, it gets black around theentire edge of the leaf. the black part is about a quarter inch margin, and is like a thin mildew black. Is it a watering problem? I cannot post pictures, sorry.

One of my three basjoos did exactly that all summer. It was far more sensetive than the other two. If it had even slightly too much water it would get the black edges. If the soil got a little too dry some of the leaves would snap down, as if the plant didn't have enough energy to sustain them. My other two handled excess water fine, and if the soil was dry, they were ok until they got watered. The two came from a nursery here in NJ, called TripleOaks. The weaker plant was Monrovia, bought at a larger retailer.

Well I am glad you got them from Joe. He's a really nice guy and I got my thomsonii seeds from him back in March of 2005 when he drove down to get a load of Palms from Gary's Nursery in New Bern, NC. I gave him the tour of Raleigh while he was there and we did some swapping of plants. It was good to meet another plant person from online. I am not surprised the weaker one came from Monrovia. I know they are selling some for outrageous prices( about 80 bucks for a 3 gallon plant!?!!?!?!)

I have a few species I started from seed that did the same things this season.
I have some extremely dry heat periods which I struggle through here in zone 9B California. I have to water every day especially my potted plants.
I first noticed the issue with my Ensete Superbum plants when I had them in 80% shade. Once I moved them out to 50% sun the problem went away.
I don't know whether the sun helped of if it was something else but it worked none the less.
Here is a picture of one Superbum that started from seed this spring....I can't believe how fast it grew. It is about 3 feet taller now with 10 more leaves!!
