Banana swap anyone? (michigan)
Hi banana folks,
I was hoping one of you experienced banana growers might want to help me separate some pups and help me save some bananas for next year. I have had lots of success overwintering in the ground, but i know some of you overwinter psudostems in the garage and crawl spaces. I would love some help with these methods. anyone that wants to help could take a few of my basjoo and sikk pups, there are lots of basjoo pups that are 3 feet tall. feel free to email me at sc(at)dharmashop.com or send a message here. thanks sander |

Re: Banana swap anyone? (michigan)
I'd love some siks. I winter my orinico and bajoo in the garage which is unheated. I make a wood frame out of 2x3 lumber. I lay one inch thick styrofoam on the loor inside the frame to insulate against the cold concrete. The whole enclosure is 4 feet wide by 4 feet high by 16 feet long. I wrap the whole enclosure with a heavy tarp and throw a whole bunch of old blankets over the top and sides for insulation. If you want to spend the money you could use insulation board but it is expensive and you have to store all this material over the summer months. I place a bucket with a little water in it for humidity and I placed a ceramic disc heater from ace hardware inside for heat. I set the thermostst for around 50 degrees and that is it til spring when it is time to re-plant. Hope this works for you. Let me know if you have any more questions. Mark

sorry folks
The bananas that were in the ground are long cut down and covered. I was not able to save any pups for trade as no one answered me quickly. maybe next year.

Re: Banana swap anyone? (michigan)
Anyone Else Out There From Michigan? Im From Grand Rapids And Am A Banana/tropical Addict After Living In The Virgin Islands And Maui For 7 Years...now Back Home In The Snow! This Is The First Winter For My Bosjoos In The Ground Over Winter, Hope They Survive. Ive Got Hydroponic Bananas In My House And The Leaves Are Drying Out And Turning Brown. I Mist Them Twice A Day And Have A 1000 Watt Light In The Room. The Water Was Too Cold So I Had To Get A Small Water Heater...better Now With New Growth!

Re: Banana swap anyone? (michigan)
WOW, iam starting to get interested in hydroponic banana gardening. What a coincidence. Iam Z6 Cincinnati. This is my 1st winter with bananas. Iam not going to let a little brown around the edges bother me. I just wanna keep that stem intact till May08! Then in the spring the next step is too wake it up. MG
