This is a picture of my Raja Puri taken immediately after the winter protection
was removed. The mother died down anyway, details of which have been
previously posted.

On the other hand, I firmly believed that the sucker was and would be alive.
But the sucker did not sprout the second young leaf until this day, so I
cut back the sucker's stem and found exactly the same phenomenon with
the mother i.e. the center young leaf was dead rotten to the corm despite
the leaf and the stem was alive.

Thus all Raja Puris I had were lost despite they were planted in the different
places and in the different soils. Although the reason must have been the
irregular changes of the temperature, then why this did not happen to other
species?

stan, that is really a great loss looking at your picture, i hope someone has
an explanation for this, especially how it comes that the pup died also.

There could be some root or corm rot problem like fungal diseases that the RP is susceptible. Also, you may need aeration, it seems like the corm is suffocated by solid barriers all around. I usually would use 1 inch PVC pipes that I cut with several slits and have it go under those solid barriers and around the base of the plant. It is a lot of work but works for bad clay soils.

I lost my Rajapuri mother plant this year to my cruddy clay soil. This year I'm diggin em up (pups)and building all of my beds up 8-14 " higher an adding rice hulls and gin trash. Water runs right through this mix and the gin trash will hold enough moisture for the plants. The best part , it's FREE !!
Many grain , cotton... processors are thrilled to have folks haul this stuff of for them and if you dig down into the piles you can get the composted stuff from last years crops.

I had a similar problem with a Musa itinerans.
The stem seemed to be o.k., but the center of the stem was brown.
By following the brown center I have cut down the stem till I reached the rhizome. There continued the rotten problem.
So I made a cut across the rhizome and the section showed that the
rotten trail crossed the rhizome to some rotten roots.
I think the problem began at the roots, than turned into the rhizome and
blocked the growingcenter.
Maybe that came from too much water during the cold phase.
