Default Advice on the right Banana plant to ..... plant.

I live in Zone 7b (Birmingham Alabama area). We are decorating our pool area with tropical type plants. I went on a desperate search for a Windmill palm over the past several months but the local place that has large adolescent (can a plant be adolescent?) were completely sold out. Every other place in the country were sold out of large windmills that even remotely resembled trees. Windmills are slow growers, so the only option was to get a bushy sized palm and wait two decades for it to get to tree sized.

So I then had a brainstorm. A banana plant! I'm starting from scratch on research here, but I'd like to get the thing ordered and planted. So I found this forum and figured yall would be far more knowledgeable than most.

What we are looking for:
1. Large size when mature so that it's a feature type plant in our pool area
2. tolerate of zone 7 of course. I don't want to kill the poor thing
3. fast growing

Bonus: edible fruits. The research I've done so far indicates that some banana plants bear inedible fruits. This isn't a MUST quality, but it would be nice/cool for the kids.

What advice can you give to a banana beginner? Thanks so much for your help!

You might have a chance for fruit with Namwa (most often advertised as "ice cream") or Basjoo if you are not concerned with fruit. Both will die back in the winter but should be able to grow back to good size by midsummer if fertilized with a heavy hand regularly. Check the wikipedia and search for more details and information. Good luck!

Thanks!

In fact there is a lady who lives in Birmingham that has one of these I think. They flourish without her doing much to them. She brags about her blue bananas. I see that at least one banana tree that is referred to as ice cream has blue fruit. I'm going to check at the local nursery and may also order one of these ice cream bananas and try.

sounds like blue java ice cream
if you buy regular ice cream you often get namwa which is also a somewhat cold hardy good tasting banana
to get the real blue java search the for sale section on the forum here
higher odds of getting the real one
